"I'm kind of surprised I beat Tony to the punch on this one"
- Scott Colvin, May 8, 2012
Yep. He beat me to Lights by almost nine years. For years, I had kind of a blindspot to Lights - I had trouble getting into her music. This is despite several friends of mine being huge fans, including the one who called her an "absolute queen". When I was researching music for #MapleLeafMarch, though, I decided it was time to give her a second chance.
Yeah, her music is right in my wheelhouse.
Her 2nd album Siberia now ranks as one of my favorite albums ever, and I am quite a fan. Consistently since mid-February, she's been among my most played artists on Spotify.
For this post, the 1,000th on this blog, I chose her only song thus far to chart in the United States, from her 2017 Skin & Earth album. If it feels like the verses and choruses are completely different songs, it is because they were written separately and really WERE separate songs that the songwriters (including Lights) were determined to stitch together.
The song feels appropriately large for such a momentous post.
See what I did there? "Giants"? Large?! But seriously, the song is huge. Epic, even.
The video is an accompaniment to a comic book that was developed to be enjoyed alongside the album. There's a storyline here.
As is somewhat traditional, Lights released an acoustic version of Skin & Earth in 2019. Strangely, this song didn't make the cut - probably because of the complexity of the song - the songs for that set were not recorded in a studio.
That doesn't mean that an acoustic version of this song doesn't exist. It is absolutely magnificent, and even though it didn't make the album, it WAS released as a single.

I want to take a moment to commemorate this moment. I've truly enjoyed writing this blog for the last nine years, the first couple with my very good friend Scott. I am not stopping, not for a long time, so I encourage you to keep reading - and write in. Let me know what you want to see here.
(edit: 22 November 2024) I figured I'd come back here for the LŪN remix of this song. Weird that LŪN would be remixing Lights, right?
