Should this be on Totally Covered? Yeah, probably. It was, at least lyrically, written by Paul Anka and popularized by Frank Sinatra in 1969.
But, you see, my father passed away on November 5th. His memorial service is today. And, if you knew him, you know he was a lot more Elvis than Frank.
I mean, those muttonchops! |
And despite being more Elvis than Frank, he certainly did things his way. Lyrically, this song gives me chills, because it is absolutely his life, to a T. To the end, he lived with few regrets, and did what needed to be done to take care of his family and himself. And, in his rugged individualism, I found inspiration, as did the many who knew and loved him.
This version, recorded in 1973 and released as a single upon Presley's death in 1977, was a bigger hit than the Sinatra version.
